Obituary for Bertie Lou Allshouse

Bertie Lou (Hill) Allshouse with her family at her side departed this life on 24 January 2015 after a long illness. Bertie Lou was born on 2 August 1929 in Akron, Ohio to Clark and Grace (Rammel) Hill. She graduated from Akron East High School. After graduating from Akron University in 1952, she taught elementary school in Mansfield, Ohio.
In June 1953 she married Herbert Allshouse "the boy next door". He was on active duty in the U.S. Navy, and she accompanied him to New London, Connecticut and then on to Pearl Harbor. She taught at Punahou in Honolulu (then the territory of Hawaii). She later taught in Euclid, Ohio while he attended medical school.
He reentered the naval service and she accompanied him to Pensacola, Florida and then on to North Kingstown, Rhode Island where they started their family. They settled in Wooster, Ohio with their three children in 1967.
After bringing up their family she returned to Akron University and earned her Master's Degree. She volunteered as a reading specialist in the Wooster public and Saint Mary's parochial schools until 1994. She enjoyed people from young to the elderly, teaching children, good books, and bicycling. Most of all she cherished being "Mom".
Bertie Lou is survived by her husband of 61 years, children John of Denver, Colorado, Jamie Elise and Beth (Dennis) Davis of Wooster, grandchildren Sophia, Fiona, and Mitchell Davis, and Marshall and Calvin Allshouse.
She is also survived by a brother Kenneth (Margaret) Hill of Brimfield, Ohio and two nieces and three nephews. A brother Don (Eleanor) Hill died in 1980.
Her husband's naval service included sea duty during the cold war when he was gone on frequent deployments. Of that time he composed the following for Bertie Lou:
"From the Bering Strait to the Andaman Sea,
Back across the Pacific
Bertie Lou was always waiting
At the pier for me."
He believes that when his time comes to cross the bar she will be there waiting as before.
A family memorial will be arranged at a later date.
Custer-Glenn Funeral Home in Wooster is assisting the family at this difficult time.
