Obituary for Sylvia M Urang

Sylvia Urang, of Wooster, died on August 21 after a long period of declining health. she was 87 years old.

Sylvia was born Sylvia Marie Allen to Lucious Allen and Lily Baldwin Allen in Hammond, IN., the fifth of six children. Orphaned as a young child, she was adopted at age 11 by Clarence Walters and Carrie Sparks Walters and lived on their farm near Graysville, IN.

She attended university in South Carolina where she met and married Gunnar Urang. They had four children, Susan Urang, Sally Urang, Tim Urang and Rebecca Urang-Elkin. They were divorced in 1968.

Sylvia was an inspired and energetic elementary school teacher for all of her adult life, with her most recent posting in the Nashville/West Holmes school system, teaching K-3 Many of her students still remember her even after several decades.

After her retirement in 1990, she continued to teach in a part-time capacity at the Ida Sue School in Wooster.

Sylvia was a lifelong conservationist, winning 'Conservation Teacher of the Year' award as well as directing many conservation projects over the years, including a bluebird box-building project that resulted in many Northeastern bluebirds returning to Holmes county to nest.

Sylvia was adventurous as well as a lover of the outdoors, hauling a camper to various exotic destinations every summer with her youngest daughter and visiting her son Tim in Alaska several times, chronicling her adventures with a movie camera and a journal, including a close encounter with a young black bear once.

Sylvia was an active member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church and volunteered with People to People Ministries.

She is survived by her four children, seven grandchildren and five great-grandsons.

A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Wooster on Saturday, Sept. 6. Time to be announced. There will be no calling hours.
