Obituary for Mark R "Doc" Lehman

Mark R. Doc" Lehman, age 56, of Orrville, passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 after a long battle with heart disease. He was born on October 18, 1957 in Orrville to Randall & Maxine (Smith-Horst) Lehman.He spent most of his life in Orrville and Apple Creek. He graduated from Orrville High School in 1976 and was a life-long member of East Chippewa Church of the Brethren. He was also a member of the Order of DeMolay and was a inductee in the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame. He married the former Carol S. Gentry. Services will be Saturday, December 14, 2013, 11:00 a.m. at the East Chippewa Church Of The Brethren, 7202 Chippewa Rd., Orrville, with the Rev. Bradley Kelley officiating. Burial will be at the East Chippewa Church of The Brethren Cemetery. Friends will greet family following the interment at the church for a time of visitation and food. Custer-Glenn Funeral Home, 2284 Benden Dr. in Wooster is honored to serve the family. Words of comfort may be shared with the family at: www.custerglenn.com. He formerly worked for three decades in the motorsports industry as a race track promoter, sanctioning body owner/official, marketing and public relations representative, radio broadcaster & journalist. He was the co-owner, co-producer & co-host of the Thrills On Wheels and Dirt Racers radio programs and was the associate producer & head writer for the Racing On Dirt TV program. In 2005 & 2006 he also assisted the production team of CNN (Cable News Network) on the program CNN Presents: Dirt Track Warriors documentary that aired July 1, 2006. He also appeared on-camera at length. Over the years he won numerous awards including several promoter of the year awards as well as prestigious Racing America Media Member of the Year for seven years, five of them consecutively. In 2006 he was inducted into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame for Outstanding Contribution to the sport. He retired from motorsports in 2007. In recent years Doc enjoyed spending time with his five grandsons and attending their sporting events, spending time with his brothers and sisters and their families and with close friends. Doc cherished his role of "Grandpa". He is survived by his wife, Carol (Gentry) Lehman; two sons, Brandon (Mindi) Lehman of Jackson Twp., and Jarrod Lehman of Orrville; a daughter, Brianne Wolfe of Hilliard; five grandsons, Hunter & Beau Tuttle and Brenden, Kaden & Axten Lehman; a son-in-law, Dan Tuttle of Orrville; two brothers, Don (Betty Jean) Horst of Loudonville; Stewart (Ursula) Lehman of Wooster; two sisters, Cheryl (Denver) McCumbers of Orrville and Karen (Rick) Horst of Smithville; his father Rev. Randall Lehman; his uncle,Bradley (Shirley) Lehman of Dalton, numerous nieces & nephews; life-long friend, Ruth (Jay) Walentik-Johnston and "birthday sister" Jeannie (Kevin) McCoy-Wilson. he was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Maxine (Smith-Horst) Lehman on October 16, 2007. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the funeral home the help defray expenses.
