Obituary for Charles "Sonny" Porter Jr.

Charles "Sonny" Porter, Jr., age 78, of Wooster, passed away, Thursday, November 17, 2016 at Life Care Hospice in Wooster after losing his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family.

He was born on March 3, 1938 in Shanesville (Sugarcreek), Ohio to Charles E. and Thelma M. (Bunting) Porter.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1956 - 1959 as Specialist Forth Class with the Army Corps. of Engineers.

He married Beverly Jean Sheely on May 16, 1959 in Sugarcreek. She survives.

He previously worked for the Belden Brick Co. in Sugarcreek for many years. He then worked for the Clyde Miller Farms Co. in Smithville for 20 years before his retirement.

In addition to farming, he was a volunteer fireman in Sugarcreek. He also enjoyed working with puzzles and had an artistic talent for woodworking. He loved to make things for his family and especially his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Michael Allen (Sharon) Porter in Wooster, Larry Dean (Sundee) Porter of Shreve, Tammy Lynn Marty of Creston and Georgian (Bill) Ellis of Wooster; 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; brothers, Ronnie (Pat) Porter of Fla. and Robert (Grace) Porter of New Philadelphia, Oh.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister, Mary Mullins.

A visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. at Custer-Glenn Funeral Home, 2284 Benden Dr., in Wooster. There will be no service.
