Obituary for Kenneth H. Martie

Kenneth H. Martie
Kenneth H. Martie passed away peacefully September 25, 2017 in Wooster, Ohio. He lived 92 years having been born on September 11, 1925 to Eunice and Manford Martie in Sardis, Ohio.

During World War II, Ken served in the U.S. Army in the European theatre. After his return to civilian life, Ken worked as a machinist primarily at the Timken Steel Company and retired after 35 years of service.

Known for being a good worker with a strong work ethic in all areas of his life, Ken managed a productive vegetable garden and colorful flowers each growing season. Every spring was welcomed with his delicious rhubarb pies. Shrubs around his house were painstakingly manicured with manual trimmers and pruners to foster growth inside and outside bushes.

At family gatherings, Ken often held babies or played with children. Games of hide and seek were legendary because he hid in treetops. Even though he called out playfully from his hiding places, the children ran in circles trying to find him.

His workshop included lovely pieces of wood that usually he acquired from cutting trees for others. Pieces of walnut became child-sized table and chairs, miniature rocking horses, and photo holders among other projects frequently given to loved ones. Twine and wood contraptions along with vice grips were used to reassemble old wooden chairs ridding them of unsteadiness. It seemed nearly all materials could be repurposed.

Ken identified and observed birds’ behavior in the natural habitat and in birdhouses and feeders of his design that dotted the property. Those observations intense and quiet seemed to be his communion with the earth and the Creator. He sat on the swing he made often with a child or a dog at his side enjoying the landscape.

Ken and his wife, Peggy, who survives, were married 69 years. Ken is also survived by two daughters, Debra (Jerry) Packard of Wooster, Ohio, JoEllen (Thomas) Schaad of Lexington, Ohio and daughter-in-law, Jeanne Martie of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. Other surviving family members include six grandchildren (Alyssa Carpenter, Melissa Martie, Marc Bowman, Anthony Martie, Bethany Packard, and Leanna Packard) along with six great-grandchildren. His brother, Paul (Karen), of Sardis, Ohio also survives.
In addition to his parents, Ken is predeceased by his son, Gary, sisters, Mary and Kathleen, and brother, George Edward.

Private graveside burial will be at the convenience of the family. A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1556 Rex Dr., Orrville, Ohio on October 12,2017 at 11:00 a.m. with a luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Paws and Prayers Pet Rescue, PO Box 67166, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44222.

Our family feels blessed by the many individuals who provided care for Ken during these last months. You are angels on earth. Thank you so much.
